Order the screen size your enclosure frame needs — not your room size

The screen mounts to your enclosure frame. The dimension you need is the inside-frame opening of the enclosure, not your room's total width or ceiling height. Most Gungho enclosure kits include a screen — if you're purchasing the Eagle screen as a replacement or for a DIY frame, measure the inside opening of your frame (edge-to-edge of the timber or pipe the screen will attach to) and order that size. If you're building a DIY frame without an enclosure kit, add 12–18 inches of extra width beyond your intended screen width for the border/attachment margin, and order a screen that matches the enclosure opening.

Rule of thumb: Screen width = room width minus 2 ft minimum on each side for enclosure frame and lateral swing clearance. Three-Layer Construction — Why It Matters

Most budget impact screens are single-layer woven fabric. At low ball speeds they're adequate. At driver speeds, single-layer screens degrade quickly, develop holes in the high-impact zone, and produce inconsistent rebound behaviour that bounces the ball back unpredictably. The Eagle screen uses three distinct layers, each with a specific job.

Outer projection surface — bright white, tightly woven

The outermost face is a smooth, bright white woven surface that reflects projector light evenly across the full screen area. Tight weave means no visible pixel gap through the fabric — the projected image appears as a continuous surface, not a grid. The white base coat also maximises contrast and colour accuracy from any short-throw projector.

Energy absorption middle layer — decelerates the ball

The mid-layer is a denser woven fabric that absorbs and distributes the ball's kinetic energy as it passes through the outer surface. This layer does the structural work of slowing the ball — reducing the rebound velocity to a safe, contained bounce rather than a full-speed return. At 250 mph ball speeds this layer takes the most stress and is what separates a long-lasting screen from one that holes within a season.

Backing layer — structural integrity and shape retention

The innermost backing layer maintains the screen's flat, tensioned shape across the full surface area. Without a backing layer, the screen billows and develops ripples that distort the projected image and create inconsistent impact behaviour from shot to shot. The backing also prevents the energy-absorbing mid-layer from separating under repeated high-speed impacts.

Structure
The hole problem: Impact screens develop holes in the strike zone eventually — this is normal wear on any screen used at real golf ball speeds. The 3-layer construction extends the time to first hole significantly vs single-layer screens. When a hole does develop in the outer projection layer, the inner layers continue to contain the ball safely — you'll see a visual blemish before the screen becomes a containment risk.

    A common projector complaint in simulator setups is a "grainy" or "textured" image on the screen. This almost always comes from an open-weave or coarse-surface impact screen where the fabric weave is visible through the projected image. For a typical club golfer with 85–105 mph driver swing speed and resulting ball speeds of 125–155 mph, the Eagle screen is operating at roughly half its rated capacity on every shot.     Screen bounceback is the velocity the ball retains after passing through the screen fabric and rebounding toward the golfer. A high-bounceback screen returns the ball with enough speed to travel 8–12 ft back into the room — meaning the ball frequently ends up near or behind the hitting position. A well-designed woven screen like the Eagle reduces this to a short hop that falls within 2–4 ft of the screen face. This is why your landing zone flooring matters — a properly configured landing zone (thick turf on rubber tile padding) stops the ball cleanly within the enclosure.     A screen trimmed from a standard sheet wastes material and leaves raw edges that fray quickly at the highest-stress point — the attachment edge. Custom sizing means the Eagle screen is manufactured to your exact dimensions with finished, reinforced edges on all four sides and attachment grommets positioned for the precise frame geometry. Installation Detail

Screen Tension: The Difference Between a Good Image and a Great One

Tension is the most under-discussed variable in simulator screen installation. The same screen, at different tensions, can look dramatically different on projection and behave very differently on ball impact.

Correct tension — firm but not rigid
The screen surface is flat across its full area with no visible sag or bellowing. The ball strikes the fabric and decelerates through 2–4 inches of fabric flex — enough to absorb energy without bouncing back hard. The projected image is smooth, colour-accurate, and has no hot spots from over-tightening. The edge grommets take the tension load, not the fabric body.

Over-tensioned — image distortion + rebound risk
A screen pulled too tight has no flex on impact — ball strikes it like a rigid surface and bounces back at much higher speed. The fabric can also develop micro-tears at the grommet attachment points under over-tension. Image may show slight hot-spot in centre from uneven surface plane. Tighten until flat — then stop.

Under-tensioned — image sag + inconsistent impact
A loose screen billows visibly and the projected image shows distortion and waviness, particularly near the top and sides. Ball impacts are inconsistent because the screen surface angle changes depending on where on the billowing area the ball hits. The ball also travels further into the screen and loses its predictable rebound direction.
12–18 inch gap behind the screen
Leave 12–18 inches between the back of the screen fabric and the wall behind it. This space allows the screen to flex slightly on impact and absorb energy — eliminating the "hard backing" effect where the ball hits the screen and immediately contacts the wall behind it. This gap is as important as the tension itself for controlling ball bounce.

Frequently Asked Questions

Measure the inside frame opening of your enclosure — the distance from one side timber to the other (width), and from floor to top beam (height). Order that exact size. If you're building a DIY frame without an enclosure kit, your screen width should be your room width minus at least 2 ft per side for frame and swing clearance. Most residential builds land on 10 ft × 10 ft or 10 ft × 12 ft as the most common combinations. Not sure? The room configurator outputs the recommended screen size based on your room dimensions.
Gungho enclosure kits include an impact screen matched to the enclosure size — you don't need to purchase the Eagle screen separately for a new enclosure kit build. The Eagle screen is typically purchased when: (a) replacing a worn screen in an existing enclosure, (b) upgrading from a standard screen to the Premium Eagle, (c) building a DIY frame from scratch without the full enclosure kit, or (d) purchasing a screen for a non-Gungho frame that accepts a standard rectangular screen.
The Eagle screen works with any short-throw projector (throw ratio 0.5–0.9) — the same projector requirements as any simulator screen. For a 10 ft wide screen, a projector with a 0.69–0.83 throw ratio needs to be positioned 6.9–8.3 ft from the screen for a 10 ft fill. The bright white surface means a 3,000+ lumen projector produces a clean image in rooms with ambient light control. For garages with any daylight intrusion, 4,000+ lumens is the minimum. This varies by use intensity, ball speed, and where you tend to hit on the screen. The 3-layer construction is designed for high-repetition use at full ball speeds. For a home golfer hitting 50–200 balls per session several times a week at typical driver ball speeds (130–160 mph), the screen should maintain its containment and projection integrity for several years before the outer layer develops visible wear in the centre strike zone. The inner layers continue to provide safe ball containment even after the outer projection layer shows wear marks. When a distinct hole appears in the strike zone, replacement is advisable.
The Eagle screen is designed for indoor simulator use. UV exposure degrades the fabric's structural integrity over time and the bright white projection surface loses its reflectance characteristics in direct sunlight. For occasional outdoor use in covered spaces (covered patio, carport, shade structure), the screen will function but may show faster degradation than in an indoor environment. For permanent outdoor simulator setups, look for screens with UV-stabilised coatings specifically designed for outdoor use.
For most simulator software (GSPro, E6 Connect), 4:3 or near-4:3 is the standard for home use because the taller format captures the full ball arc from tee to green without clipping the shot trajectory at the top of the screen. A 10 ft × 10 ft screen is exactly 4:3 in portrait orientation (square in this case). A 10 ft × 12 ft screen is near 4:3 wide. A 10 ft × 16 ft approaches 16:9 widescreen. Most home builders choose a screen that fills their available width and matches the room's ceiling height, then configure the projector's aspect ratio to fill the screen cleanly.
